Nutrition and Meals at Ferntree Gully Children’s Centre

Our meals are freshly prepared on site in our services accredited kitchen by our own chef who is familiar with the nutritional requirements of children from birth to six years of age in line with the Australian Dietary Guidelines. Our seasonal menu reflects the fresh produce available in our community and from our services vegetable gardens.

Through our Kitchen Garden Project which is embedded through our service, teaches children of all age about pleasurable food experiences, embracing the flavours as well as the health benefits of fresh, seasonal, delicious food.

All meals are nutritionally balanced and appealing to children to provide your child with the nutrients their bodies need to grow and develop to reach their physical and mental potential. Educators start discussions and education to promote good nutrition for your child from commencing at our service. This is done through discussions, play, role modelling, cooking experiences, gardening, incursions, newsletter articles, factsheets and displays through the service.

At Ferntree Gully Children’s Centre, we know that what children eat plays a vital role in how they learn, grow, and thrive. That’s why nutrition isn’t just an afterthought — it’s a key part of how we care for your child each day.

Why Nutrition Matters in Early Childhood

The early years are a critical time for physical growth and brain development. Proper nutrition fuels energy, strengthens the immune system, supports emotional regulation, and helps children stay focused and alert throughout the day. Good nutrition during these years lays the foundation for lifelong healthy habits. By exposing children to a wide variety of whole foods, we help shape their taste preferences and build a positive relationship with food from the very beginning.

What Meals Are Provided?

Our centre provides nutritious morning tea, lunch, and afternoon tea, all lovingly prepared by our dedicated in-house cook. We follow a seasonal rotating menu based on the Australian Dietary Guidelines, ensuring that children receive balanced meals from all five food groups. Each meal is tailored to the needs of different age groups, whether your child is an energetic toddler or a busy pre-kindy learner building independence.

Catering for Allergies, Dietary Needs, and Cultural Preferences

We understand that each child is unique, and so are their dietary needs. Our team works closely with families to accommodate allergies, intolerances, religious practices, and cultural preferences. Our kitchen follows strict allergen-safe food preparation practices, and we provide clear communication about menu ingredients. You can rest assured your child will be cared for in a safe, inclusive, and respectful way at every mealtime.

Promoting Healthy Eating Habits

Mealtimes are more than just a break in the day — they’re a valuable opportunity to teach children about food, routine, and community. Our educators support children in learning to try new foods without pressure, feed themselves using appropriate utensils, and engage in calm, social conversations at the table. By creating a relaxed, positive environment around food, we help children feel comfortable exploring a wide range of flavours and textures.

Learning Through Food: Engaging Activities

We also weave food and nutrition education into daily activities. Children might participate in simple cooking experiences, storytime about fruits and veggies, sensory play that introduces different textures and smells, or gardening activities where they plant and watch herbs and veggies grow. Through these experiences, children start to understand where food comes from, how it fuels their body, and why healthy choices matter.

Encouraging a Love of Nutritious Food

We believe in setting children up for a lifelong love of wholesome food. Our approach is simple: make healthy food appealing, fun, and part of everyday life. Children are naturally more open to new foods when they’re involved in the process — from talking about what’s on their plate to helping mix, stir, and serve.

Promoting Healthy Habits Beyond the Plate

At Ferntree Gully Children’s Centre, nutrition is just one part of supporting children’s overall health. We also offer Dental Incursions, where dental professionals visit the centre to teach children about oral hygiene, brushing techniques, and the importance of healthy teeth. These sessions complement our nutrition program by linking what children eat to their dental health, reinforcing lifelong habits in a fun and engaging way.
